Graduating Gators Reflect on Growth, Leadership and What Comes Next

ORANGE, TX As commencement approaches at Lamar State College Orange (LSCO), graduating students say their time on campus gave them far more than college credits. Through leadership opportunities, friendships and personal growth, they say they are leaving campus more confident about their futures and the paths ahead.

For many of the students, attending LSCO was not part of the original plan. But they said the experience helped them mature, build connections and prepare for what comes next.

“I’m very grateful because it gave me time to mature and develop good study habits and meet new people,” said Reid Burman, who plans to transfer to Texas State University after graduation.

Students said involvement in organizations such as Student Government Association and Phi Theta Kappa helped them gain leadership experience and professional skills that will benefit them beyond college.

Zoey Royer, Student Government Association president, said campus involvement helped her develop communication and advocacy skills while encouraging others to find their voice.

“I hope that they aren't afraid to find their passion. And I hope that they aren't afraid to do what is right when no one's looking,” Royer said.

For Lucia Liu, the classroom experience helped shape both her academic goals and her confidence moving forward. Liu said science courses introduced her to close friendships while strengthening her interest in the medical field.

“I developed a greater interest in both subjects,” Liu said of her biology and chemistry classes.

Liu said she hopes to earn a degree in chemical engineering before attending medical school.

Other students said their time at LSCO helped them discover new interests and possibilities they had not previously considered.

HeavenLeigh Hughes said anatomy courses unexpectedly changed the way she thinks about her future career.

“I'm thinking genuinely about being a heart surgeon, because I'm so interested in it now,” Hughes said.

As they prepare to graduate, the students said they are carrying forward lessons in leadership, communication and resilience while looking ahead to careers, continued education and new opportunities.

Several students also reflected on the importance of community during their time at LSCO, saying friendships, faculty support and campus involvement helped shape their college experience and gave them confidence about the future.
