ORANGE, TX – Lamar State College Orange (LSCO) has received a $25,000 grant from Dow Sabine River Operations to purchase a new CNC machine for the college’s Machining Program, further strengthening workforce training opportunities and supporting the growing demand for skilled machinists across Southeast Texas.

The new CNC machine will provide students with hands-on experience using advanced manufacturing technology commonly found in modern industrial settings. By expanding the program’s equipment and capabilities, the grant will help ensure students graduate with the practical skills and technical knowledge needed to succeed in high-demand careers within the region’s manufacturing and petrochemical industries.

The Machining Program at LSCO was created in partnership with local industry partners who identified a critical need for trained machinists and millwrights in Southeast Texas. When the program launched in January 2026, it became the first manual machining program of its kind in the region, designed specifically to prepare students for careers in precision manufacturing.

The addition of the new CNC machine will allow the program to expand training opportunities, increase student capacity, and provide more real-world experience aligned with current industry standards. It also reinforces the strong partnership between LSCO and regional employers committed to building a highly skilled local workforce.

“This CNC machine investment is the result of the vision, dedication, and belief of an outstanding team working tirelessly to strengthen the connection between industry and education. Dow is proud to work together to develop programs that meet local industry needs and support a skilled workforce throughout our community,” said Clint Temple, Early Career Leader, Dow Sabine River Operations.

Dr. Wendy Elmore, President of LSCO, said the grant reflects the power of collaboration between education and industry to create meaningful career pathways for students. "We are extremely grateful to Dow Sabine River Operations for their continued partnership and investment in our students and programs," said President Elmore. "This grant allows us to provide cutting-edge training that prepares students for high-quality careers while helping local industries meet their workforce needs. Together, we are building opportunities that strengthen our region and transform lives."

The Machining Program is part of LSCO’s broader commitment to workforce development and industry-responsive education. Through strong partnerships with local employers, the college continues to design and deliver programs that align directly with regional workforce demands and provide students with clear pathways to stable, well-paying careers.
