IV Training - Course Requirements

To become certified in Sterile Compounding and Aseptic Technique you must complete the following:

  1. Track your course work on the Documentation of Training Hours Form. Your instructor will provide you with the Documentation of Training Hours Form. Fill out the identifying information at the top of the form. As you progress through the course, fill in the number of minutes that you spending working on each chapter in the first three columns

    Didactic Training Documentation:
    • The number of minutes that you spend in lecture and on homework, each chapter goes in the column next to the chapter.
    • Add total minutes on column number one and total minutes on column number two together. This will total the amount of time you spent for all chapters for the didactic education portion of the course. You will divide that number by 60 to give you the total amount of hours spent. Note: Your total amount should be greater than 12 hours.
    Hands – On Training and Competency Assessment:
    • Record the number of minutes that you spend training, practicing technique, and undergoing process validation for each of the nine procedural labs.  NOTE: The amount of time spent on the hands-on training and process validation of this course should be total a minimum of 20 hours. This is completed by the instructor.
    The Sterile Compounding and Aseptic Technique Course require a minimum of 12 hours of didactic education, 8 hours dedicating testing time and a minimum of 20 hours of hands-on training for a total of 40 hours. Your Documentation of Training Hours Form should reflect at a minimum of 40 hours of total training for the course. The instructor must validate all of your training hours by signing off on your form and submit it to the CPE provider at the end of the course. It is your responsibility to track your hours and to submit your completed Documentation of Training Hours Form to you instructor at the end of the course. Submission of the Documentation of Training Hours Form is a requirement.

  2. Complete the Didactic Portion of the Course. Complete all 16 chapters of the textbook, including any reading, quizzes, or homework assigned by instructor (will an overall, average score of ≥ 90%). Instructor may assign additional readings, PowerPoint lecture materials, or other course work to be completed on Blackboard or via other delivery method. Refer to the course schedule provided by instructor for course due dates.

  3. Pass ALL four of the exams with a score of 75% or better. The exams cover information from you textbook, including the procedural labs from each chapter.

  4. Complete the required hands-on training in the pharmacy clean room or IV lab. Instructor will provide you with additional information regarding the mandatory training sessions.

  5. Complete 9 Process Validations. The process validation for each of the nine procedural labs must be completed under direct observation of instructor, with 90% compliance to basic aseptic technique principals.

  6. Return the completed Documentation of Training Hours Form to instructor. The Documentation of Training Hours Form must be completed and returned to instructor upon completion of course. The form must indicate a minimum of 12 hours of didactic education, 8 hours dedicating testing times, as well as a minimum of 20 hours of hands-on training; for 40 hours (minimum total) of coursework.

  7. Complete the Evaluation of CPE Activity Form. At the end of the course, instructor will provide you with the Evaluation of CPE Activity Form; you must complete this form and return it to instructor.

Upon successful completion of this course, outlined in the steps above, instructor will submit your exams, Process Validation Forms, Documentation of Training Hours Form and Evaluation of CPE Activity Form to the CPE provider. If all paperwork is complete and in order the student will receive the following:

  • A nationally recognized certificate, Sterile Compounding and Aseptic Technique. A Statement of Credit for 40 Hours (4.0 CEUs) of ACPE accredited continuing education. Both documents will be mailed, within 30 days of approval, to the address provided on the Form Registration.
  • ACPE award of CE credit will be uploaded into CPE Monitor within 60 days of receipt of the final paperwork. ACPE credit will only be uploaded into CPE monitor if you provide your NABP ePID number and date of birth (month/day) on your Student Registration Form.
