Lamar State College Orange (LSCO)'s Court Reporting Program continues to mature and thrive. The program has had eminent success and even received curriculum approval from the Judicial Branch Certification Commission (JBCC).

The JBCC oversees the certification, registration and licensing of court reporters. Receiving this approval is instrumental in the success and reputability of Court Reporting programs. Now, potential students can visit the JBCC website directly to view LSCO’s program approval.

“This approval tells a prospective student that LSCO has reached a level of trust and respect with their program and that LSCO provides a dependable and solid education in Court Reporting,” Court Reporting Program Director Cristy Smith said.

In another win for Court Reporting, Smith received her Certified Reporting Instructor (CRI) certificate. To earn this certificate, Smith completed an intensive five-week course and passed the Registered Professional Reporter Written Knowledge Exam. The program is aimed at helping participants become more knowledgeable, effective realtime reporting instructors.

“In the five weeks of online interactive instruction, I learned about successful teaching methods and how to effectively communicate with students,” Smith said. “It provided the tools and understanding of an entire course from start to finish: Building a syllabus, preparing a lesson plan, implementing that lesson plan effectively, and the different types of speed building methods to utilize, etc.”

The Court Reporting Program provides students with an efficient, flexible learning opportunity. It expands the career horizon and opportunities for LSCO attendees. These courses teach students to be dedicated to their craft as they embark on a unique learning path.

“We have recently been given new materials for testing, an adjunct professor who holds the same standards that our amazing program director does, and Zoom calls with our classmates that we can join live or watch later recorded,” Court Reporting student Emily Dalfrey said. “Sometimes being in an online program can make you feel really secluded, but our program director connects us with other people in our program, making our camaraderie and overall program morale enjoyable.”

Court reporting provides an array of exceptional opportunities. There are options to travel, work remotely and everything in between. LSCO’s program offers students the chance to learn from highly experienced instructors, program completion accountability, coaching for practice/testing and much more.
