Medical Assisting Program Frequently Asked Questions

The Medical Assisting is a 15-hour program which may be completed in one semester or longer, based on the number of courses you take each semester.
There is no official application to submit for this program. Simply register for the courses you are interested in taking. Courses in this certificate are offered every semester (Fall, Spring, Summer).

Prior to participating in the clinical components, PLAB 1160 and VNSG 1160, students must:

  • submit documentation of a current TB test and current year FLU vaccine
  • pass a Criminal Background Check through the Texas Department of Public Safety
  • students enrolled in VNSG 1160 must also provide documentation of a current Healthcare Provider CPR course (no other courses are accepted)

Classes are offered every semester. Refer to the course schedule for specific days and times.

The estimated cost of the programs is available on our website. For information regarding financial aid or scholarships, contact the Office of Financial Aid at (409) 882-3317 or financialaid@lsco.edu.

The clinical components of Phlebotomy and Basic Nursing, PLAB 1160 and VNSG 1160 require the student to have basic equipment. While completing clinical hours, the students are also required to adhere to the Medical Assisting uniform requirements. These requirements are listed under estimated expenses and also in the clinical course syllabi.

Students accepted into the Medical Assisting program must have a clear criminal background check to participate in the clinical components. The program director will request a background check through the Texas Department of Public Safety for Medical Assisting students.
