Emergency Medical Services Program Frequently Asked Questions

What are the minimum requirements to be considered for admission to the EMS programs?
To be considered for admission into the EMS Basic program, you must submit a completed application by the due date.  Once accepted, you must submit the completed History and Physical form and provide proof of immunizations.

After acceptance into the EMS Basic program, you must:

  • submit a completed History and Physical form and provide proof of immunizations, after acceptance, and
  • pass a Criminal Background Check through the Texas Department of Public Safety.

To be considered for admission into the EMS Intermediate program you must submit:

  • proof of EMT-Basic certification,
  • a completed application by the due date, and
  • a current History and Physical form and proof of immunizations (if not already on file).

Do I need to submit a new application for each certificate (basic and intermediate)?
You must submit a new application with current contact information, History and Physical form, and Proof of Immunizations (if not already on file).

What are the requirements to be eligible to take the EMT certification exams?
To be eligible to take the NREMT Basic EMT certification exam, you must be 18 years of age and successfully complete EMSP 1501 Emergency Medical Technology – Basic and EMSP 1260 Clinical I – Basic.
To be eligible to take the NREMT Advanced EMT certification exam, you must be 18 years of age and successfully complete EMSP 1438 Introduction to Advanced Practice and EMSP 2260 Clinical – Emergency Medical Technician. 

If I am a transfer student, how do I know my classes/credits will transfer?

When is the application due date?
Applications for the EMT-Basic and EMT-Intermediate programs are accepted each semester and must be received by the EMS Program Director at least one week prior to the first-class day.

When do classes start? How many days a week are we in class and clinical? Is each semester different from each other?
The EMT-Basic class starts in August and meets every Monday and Wednesday evening from 5-9pm.
The EMT-Intermediate class starts in January and meets every Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5-9pm.
The clinical rotations for both classes are done on your own time, but should be scheduled at least two weeks in advance with the clinical coordinator. The required hours are listed in the clinical syllabus for each class.

How much does your program cost? Are there scholarships or financial aid available?

What kind of equipment and uniforms are required?
Both the Basic and Intermediate clinical courses require the student to have basic equipment. While completing clinical hours, the students are also required to adhere to the EMT uniform requirements. These requirements are listed in the clinical course syllabi.

Do you require a Criminal Background Check?
Students accepted into the EMT programs must have a clear criminal background check.  The program director will request a background check through the Texas Department of Public Safety for EMT Basic students.  EMT Intermediate students are required to provide proof of EMT-Basic certification.

If you are planning to take the NREMT certification exam for either EMT Basic or EMT Advanced certification, a back ground will be required.  After passing the NREMT certification exam, the Texas Department of State Health Services, EMS Division, will require you to pass an FBI criminal background check before issuing you a state certificate.
