Q&A with Faculty Senate President Scarborough

Q: How were you selected as the Faculty Senate President?
A:I was elected by the current Senate membership at the beginning of the fall semester.
Q: Have you served on the Faculty Senate before?
A:This is my fourth year serving on the Faculty Senate.
Q: What does the Faculty Senate do?
A:The faculty and administration of the college share governance, which means we share responsibility and participation in developing policies and making decisions that affect the college as a whole. The Faculty Senate deliberates and sets academic policies, and advises the college President and Provost based on faculty expertise. It helps to ensure the administration and faculty can communicate, understand and work together on important matters like curriculum, instruction, advising, procedures, professional standards, and many others. It's made up of elected representatives from each instructional division, who can share experience and perspectives from the classroom, so that decisions made at the executive level can have the best impact on the students and their instructors.
Q What do you hope to accomplish in this role?
A: The instructors and the executive leadership have very different roles and duties, but we share a common goal, to serve the school and our students at all levels. It's my job to ensure that we hear and understand each other to effectively work towards that goal.
Q: How long have you worked at LSCO?
A: This is my eighth year at LSCO.
Q: What is your favorite course to teach?
A:Contemporary Math lets me think and teach about the widest variety of math topics in a single course. I also enjoy Precalculus which incorporates advanced algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
Q: What’s your favorite thing about LSCO?
A: My colleagues here have always been generous and helpful from the time I started here as a first-time instructor, and they continue to provide a community of support as I take on new roles and responsibilities.
