New Faces, New Energy: SGA Senators Elected to Lead Positive Change

October 17, 2024

New SGA Members

The Student Government Association (SGA) recently elected new members to serve on the senate. SGA serves to improve the lives of our student body by working in conjunction with faculty, staff, and peers.

The organization held senator elections earlier this year. Zoey Royer, Natalie Chavez, Ella Burns, and Chloe Abshire were elected to fill these open positions and joining existing senators Arturo Garcia and Oliver Morgan. Officers, members, and SGA advisor, Amy Moore, are all looking forward to seeing them confidently step into these roles.

“We are so excited to have them on our team and can't wait to see what they accomplish,” SGA President, Josh Taylor, said.

SGA is a group of student leaders who seek to serve their peers. They are actively involved in campus life and strive for academic success. Members champion students and work to represent them to the best of their ability. They encourage students to use their voice as a force for good to promote positive change throughout the college.

“The Student Government Association is an organization that advocates for our students to help improve their lives and help them achieve academic success,” Taylor said. “We are here to make physical change on campus that makes a positive impact in LSCO students' lives.”

Being involved in the Student Government Organization is beneficial for all students. The organization presents an array of opportunities for those who participate. There are even scholarships awarded for those who serve as officers and on the senate.

“Getting involved in SGA is a great way to connect and engage with other students on campus, to build relationships that will last far beyond LSCO, and to make a positive difference on our campus,” SGA Advisor, Amy Moore, said. “SGA also provides volunteer opportunities both on and off campus which are excellent ways of networking. We typically travel to at least one conference a year, which allows students to connect with other students across the state and nation. Our officers and senators earn scholarships each semester, too, which can go a long way to helping cover the cost of tuition.”

The Student Government Association is a proactive group. Recently, SGA leaders worked tirelessly for a $1.25 pay raise for student workers after decades of it being minimum wage. This is just a glimpse into what the organization is capable of accomplishing.

“SGA is a united front for students, helping navigate policies and procedures in effective and efficient ways to benefit students,” Moore said. “Recently, SGA heard student concerns regarding the pay scale for student workers on campus. SGA leaders heard the concern, researched, interviewed, presented and lobbied for an increase in student worker pay.”

SGA is open to all LSCO students. Meetings are held every other Thursday at 3:00pm. Students can attend in person in room 202 of the JBW Student Center or online via Teams. Visit the SGA website for upcoming meeting dates and to learn more about how you can get involved.
