A "HOW TO" GUIDE TO LSC-O

A. HOW TO GET INTO COLLEGE

  • Pick up an application for undergraduate admission at the Office of Admissions and Records.
  • Obtain official high school transcript and return both the transcript and the application for admission to the Office of Admissions and Records. Present a current driver’s license and Social Security card.
  • If applying by GED, an official copy of your GED scores and a transcript from the last high school you attended must be returned to the Admissions Office along with your application for admission.

B. FINANCIAL AID

  • Financial aid or scholarship forms may be obtained in the Financial Aid Office. The Free Application For Student Aid (FAFSA) must be completed and mailed in the Federal Financial Aid Programs envelope, or it may be filed electronically, using the address in the FAFSA form.
  • Scholarship forms must be returned to the Financial Aid Office.

C. PLACEMENT EXAMS

The Texas Academic Skills Program law has been repealed. However, Senate Bill 286, the Texas Success Initiative, continues to require students to be assessed and remediated if needed. All students who are entering any Texas public college, university or technical institute and who are not otherwise exempt must take a test for reading, writing and math proficiency.

THE ASSET OR THEA TEST MUST BE TAKEN BEFORE REGISTRATION INTO CLASSES.

ASSET/COMPASS is the test of choice at LSC-O. However, THEA scores will be accepted. Students with disabilities should register for the THEA exam because there are time restraints for the ASSET exam. ASSET may be retaken every 30 days and will be used as the final exam for developmental classes.

  • THEA registration bulletins with complete information about the Texas Success Initiative may be obtained at the Testing Center, Admissions Office or Advising and Counseling Office, rooms 104, 341 or 354 in the Ron E. Lewis Library Building.

NOTE: TSI does not exempt students from college placement guidelines for English or math. Also, students needing special accommodations for THEA must register through the State-Level THEA accommodation procedure. For details see the current THEA Registration Bulletin.

To register for the ASSET:

  • Call the Lamar-Orange Testing Center at 409-882-3330 to register. Registration can be made only through the Testing Center. Payment in advance of registration will not secure a seat.
  • Pay $17.00 test fee to the Cashier’s Office.
  • Bring receipt and picture ID with you on the day of the test to the Testing Center.

You may choose to take the THEA test (known as QuickTHEA) at the Testing Center:

  • Pick up a listing of the QuickTHEA test dates at the Testing Center, Admissions or the Advising and Counseling Office and/or call the Testing Center for registration information at 409-882-3330. A $10.00 non-refundable registration fee must be paid to the cashier (3rd floor of the Ron E. Lewis Library) and receipt brought to the Testing Center (room 104, Ron E. Lewis Library) to register.
  • Choose the appropriate test date and time.
  • On the day of the test, bring a PICTURE I.D. and PERSONAL CHECK, CASHIER’S CHECK or MONEY ORDER payable to N.E.S. for $29.00 as method of payment. Persons without Picture I.D.s and appropriate payments will not be tested.

NOTE: Registration must be made in advance since all seats are on a first come, first served basis.

  • Scores will be mailed to the address you put down as your mailing address in approximately five-seven working days.
  • Students making between 230 and 270 on the mathematics section of THEA or between 38 and 44 on the ASSET math exam may be required to take math placement tests before enrolling in a math class.

D. ADVISEMENT

  • New students, students not yet completing TSI requirements, pre-vocational nursing and pre-upward mobility nursing students should pick up schedules of classes at the Office of Admissions and Records. (Students with 15 hrs. or more on this campus and who have met TSI requirements or are otherwise exempt or who have been accepted into a nursing program, please see your faculty advisor to register)

Students who have completed TSI requirements by retaking the ASSET exam may have to register through the Advising Office because of computer system restraints. We are currently working to resolve these problems as quickly as possible, but it is likely that they will not be completely resolved until after the normal registration period.

  • New students should bring ASSET or THEA scores and a schedules of classes with them to the Advising Office, located in room 354 (3rd Floor) of the Ron E. Lewis Library Building.
  • Sign in, have a seat and an advisor/counselor will be with you shortly to assist you in making out your schedule and will give you a print out of your schedule and fee statement.

E. PAYMENT

  • Take fee statement to the Cashier's Office for payment.

Congratulations! You are now a Student at Lamar - Orange.
