Choices Program

The Choices Program is a single parent/displaced homemaker program of Lamar State College-Orange.

The following links will provide specific resources offered within the Choices Program.

The Choices Program at LSCO offers a variety of support services to individuals at a time when they are completing one phase of their life and beginning a new one.

If you are a single parent or displaced homemaker, the Lamar State College - Orange Choices Program can assist you in making the choices necessary to reach your life goals. By providing individual, academic, career counseling and support, the staff at LSCO is dedicated to helping you reach your greatest potential. The program is offered free of charge and is designed to help participants to become more independent and economically secure during a time of change in their lives.

Day Care Assistance

The LSC-O Choices Program can also assist with day care expenses as funding permits. To be considered for the day care assistance program you must be registered for a minimum of 12 hours in the long semester for which you are requesting benefits. If approved for assistance the program may pay up to 50% of your day care expenses. This is paid directly to the day care provider. For an application and list of providers either come by the Advising & Counseling Office located on the 3rd floor of the Ron E. Lewis Library Building or call 409-882-3370.

Definitions

  • Single Parent
    An unmarried individual who has a minor child or children for whom the parent has either custody or joint custody and must prepare to enter the work force.
  • Displaced Homemaker
    An individual who has primarily been responsible for the care of the home and family and because of death, divorce, desertion or disability of a spouse has lost the major source of financial security and must prepare to enter the work force.

Driving Directions

  • From Beaumont: Take IH 10 East through Rose City and Vidor. Exit at 16th Street (#877). Continue east on the Frontage Road to the first stoplight. Turn right (south) on Hwy 87/16th Street. Continue south on 16th Street to Hwy 90/Green Avenue. Turn Left (east) onto Green Avenue. At the fourth stop light (4th Street), turn right (south). Go one block and the campus is located on the left.
  • From Port Arthur: Take Hwy 87 East toward Bridge City and Orange. Continue east on MacArthur Drive (Hwy 87/90). Go straight through the traffic light at 16th Street when MacArthur Drive's name changes to Green Avenue. At the fourth stop light (4th Street), turn right (south). Go one block and the campus is located on the left.
  • From Lake Charles, LA Area: Take IH 10 West into Texas and exit at Simmons Drive (Hwy 90 Business #878) Turn left under the overpass. Go South on Simmons Drive for miles. At the yield sign, turn right (west) onto Green Avenue. Turn left at the first stoplight (4th Street) go one block and the campus is located on the left.

Academic Counseling and Course Scheduling

After identification of your career goals you will receive academic counseling and course scheduling to assist you in becoming a successful student.

Course schedules are released twice a year, in November and April. Early advising and registration for the Winter Mini and the Spring Semester begins in November and continues until the first day of class.

Early advising and registration for the May Mini, Summer sessions and the Fall semester begins in April and continues until the first day of class.

Career Counseling and Planning

After a preliminary interview and analysis of your interests, aptitudes, past job experiences and prior skills training an individual career plan can be developed to help you achieve your goals.

Job Readiness and Job Search

You will receive assistance to prepare you to enter the job market with instruction in resume' writing, interviewing skills, cover letters and other aspects related to job preparation. You will also receive assistance in developing a job search plan.

Group Support

You will have the opportunity to hear guest speakers, to meet and interact with other students, to enjoy social activities and receive emotional support from "SOLUTIONS" a unique support group for participants of the program.

Referrals

Individuals with special needs are referred to appropriate on-campus departments, community agencies and organizations as needed.

Workshops and Seminars

Workshops and Seminars dealing with topics such as Parenting in the 2000's, Effective Communications, Self Esteem, Budgeting and Financial Planning, Self Esteem and Study Skills help you with both your personal and academic growth.
